After numerous studies, this is the composition I arrived at for the final piece. The finished painting will be approx. 40 x 42". Critiques are welcome.

preliminary drawings
This is some of the preliminary work I've been doing for a painting of my brother. In these drawings I'm working through the idea, composition, and mood of the piece. The room underwent a few changes as I was working on the drawings which changed the way I was imagining the piece. These are all graphite on 8.5x11" paper.
This was the composition I decided on. However, after painting a color rough of this composition, and not being completely satisfied, I decided to go back to the drawing board.
These are the drawings that followed.
